What is JOY?

I haven't mastered it, but I want to share what I am learning because here's the truth - for the first time in my life I am experiencing a season of burnout and even depression. It's scary to say that out loud, but I want to break any stigma around it and lead from a place of honesty.

Being burnt-out or struggling mentally, emotionally, spiritually - it doesn't remove you from leadership. It will try and tell you so, but its a lie. Because here's the thing - all leaders are human, all followers are human, and the best way to lead humans is to be a human.

I'm not saying that you need to invite your team and community to your therapy sessions, but I am saying that you can be real, like I'm being real right now. And that your highest leadership lies in your humanity, you being human, and pursuing the future alongside your team. Your highest leadership lies in you not being perfect, but being yourself and asking your team to do the same.

Its ironic that I should name my brand Joy to Lead, when the thing I struggle with most in my life is joy. Subconsciously, I think maybe I knew that was the point.

I believe that our purpose lies in our untapped super powers, and that they'll feel like weakness until we learn how to use it.

Here's what I'm learning about joy:

  1. You can be joyful even when you're sad
  2. You feel it when you're in your strengths
  3. You can practice it
  4. You have to be diligent, gritty, and determined that you want it
  5. It's hope, and I think hope is a decision. Even in despair, you can choose to hope. Often, I pray for God to honor my trying
  6. You have to look for it to see it

If you've ever struggled with joy, with confidence, with leading others from a deep understanding of who you are, I want to invite you to be a part of the next Leadership Academy cohort. We're kicking off January 2021, but I'm opening up pre-sale spots at an early bird rate starting now. We'll dive deep into your leadership style - we'll actually spend a whole month on it - we'll learn how you can uniquely lead and build a team, and we'll create a plan for you to grow yourself, your team and your abilities through group coaching, 1:1 coaching and an intimate community. The best part is - you'll get lifetime access to the trainings, the community, and lifetime access to group co-working sessions and book discussions. We begin Jan 2021, but there are limited spots. You can reserve yours now and commit to your growth next year with a supportive, understanding, nurturing and challenging community.
